Information Communities

An Information Community is a group of scholars, students, researchers, librarians, information specialists and citizens from similar or dissimilar fields, whose common link is a shared information need. This information need can be oriented around a subject, a field, a methodology, or a data type. The information can include text, data, digitized media, images, and formal and informal scholarly exchanges of ideas. Information Communities exist as a medium for bringing people together and making them aware of opportunities and resources. Community is fostered by personal communication, shared interests, shared research materials, shared tools, and shared standards. Information Communities add value to information, and offer opportunities for using information in new and different ways. Activities of the community can include creation of web-based materials and development of portable tools for enhancing access to the materials. Information Communities foster innovation and spark new areas of research, and usually result in a tangible body of knowledge for consumers. ----- University of Virginia…...http://infocomm.lib.Virginia.edu

Google Scholar -- Beta version

Directly from the Google Blog :

<>Thursday, November 18, 2004

Shouldering ahead

Much of scholarly research is learning what others have discovered and building on it. As the famous Isaac Newton quote goes, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Today we are launching the beta version of a service which we hope will help this process. Google Scholar is a free service that helps users search scholarly literature such as peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports.

Just as with Google Web Search, Google Scholar orders your search results by how relevant they are to your query, so the most useful references should appear at the top of the page. This relevance ranking takes into account the full text of each article as well as the article's author, the publication in which the article appeared and how often it has been cited in scholarly literature. Google Scholar also automatically analyzes and extracts citations and presents them as separate results, even if the documents they refer to aren't online. This means your search results may include citations of older works and seminal articles that appear only in books or other offline publications.

We at Google have benefited much from academic research. This is one of the ways in which we are giving back to the research community. We hope Google Scholar will help all of us stand on the shoulders of giants.

Hooked on FireFox yet??

From the University of Toronto:
Note a couple of PubMed plugins for FireFox.

Hi all,
here are some Mozilla Firefox searchplugins.
In case you don't know, Firefox is a complete rebuild of netscape navigator. It's fast,
small and generally works very well - but be warned, it's still beta software.

These plugins also mostly work in the Mozilla and Netscape 7 sidebars.

Simply click on a link to install the searchplugin:
Alternatively, here are the files, zipped for your pleasure.

(note, you need installation rights for the searchplugins directory on your machine...
just try clicking, if it doesn't work, this may be the problem)

PubMed Search Plugin: Search PubMed for papers (this uses the frames versions of the search page, and doesn't work correctly in the mozilla or netscape-7 sidebar, but it's fine for firefox quick searches.)

PubMed Search Plugin: Search PubMed for papers (this one uses the text search page, good for the mozilla/netscape-7 sidebar.)

UofT e-journal Search Plugin: Find a journal at U of Toronto

Teoma Web Search Plugin: In case you get tired of google

Search rpmfind.net: For those of us too lazy to compile

Search Canada411: Find people in Canada (lastname only, first 500)

Search Canada411 Commercial: Find companies in Canada

Find stuff on ebay (USA): Get that fish-shaped toothbrush you've always wanted!

Search amazon.com (USA): Find that book about fish-shaped toothbrushes you've always wanted!

Search USPTO patents: Search for patents on fish-shaped toothbrushes!

To uninstall these, just delete the "plugin-name.src" and "plugin-name.gif"
files from the /MozillaFirefox/searchplugins/ directory.

These should mostly work for mozilla and Netscape 7.x sidebar searches as well.
Comments and plugin requests are welcome.

-criedl.

BioMed Central search plugin for Firefox

BioMed Central search plugin for Firefox

You may have heard of Firefox 1.0, the new open-source, cross platform browser that offers speedy performance, 'tabbed browsing' and compliance with the latest web standards. Firefox has attracted rave reviews, not least because it is generally felt to offer increased security compared to Internet Explorer, and to be less vulnerable to the viruses and spyware that plagues users of Microsoft's browser.

At BioMed Central, we're fans of Firefox too, and so we've created a search plugin to make it easier for Firefox users to search the BioMed Central site. Find out how to install the BioMed Central search plugin here.

Scopus is launched

Amsterdam, 3 November 20004 - The culmination of the months of intensive feedback and development are on show today, as Scopus is launched to the world at the Science Museum in London, UK. In the 8 months since a pre-release version of Scopus was revealed to universities around the world, 200 institutions and thousands of researchers have been seeing just what a difference this unique tool can make to scientific research.

Consistently positive feedback from everyone who has seen Scopus reflects the development team’s confidence that Scopus delivers on its promise: an effective way to deal with too much information in too little time. “The scientists who’ve put Scopus to the test love it,” says Jaco Zijlstra, Director of Scopus, “we’re very excited that all researchers around the globe now have the potential to share their experience.”

Scopus - covering 14,000 scientific titles plus 167 million scientific web pages, and delivering the largest collection of abstracts ever collected online in one place, going back forty years - is now commercially available for trial and sale to any institution. As to the terms: like everything with Scopus, it’s simple - access to the complete, unabridged database to everyone at an institution. Andrea Schweikert, Scopus Sales Director comments: “Pricing is straightforward and based on an annual subscription model, taking into account specific customer circumstances.”

Already, early deals demonstrate that Scopus has got it right. Development partner universities Toronto and Nevada have shown their confidence in the product by signing up to Scopus even before the launch, as has the University of Newcastle, Australia. Users at other universities with access to Scopus echo this enthusiasm. Hilda Nassar, Director of the Saab Medical Library at the American University of Beirut quotes feedback from one of the AUB scientists: “Give me a fish and I’ll eat for a day. Give me Scopus and I’ll excel in my research.”

The launch marks a watershed in the way scientists can find the information they need. Scientists now have a truly global collection of the published literature and scientific information on the web at their fingertips. Collaboration with diverse groups of scientists during the building of Scopus’ interface has ensured that this critical mass of information can be searched, evaluated and managed by anyone.

“It’s not about searching, it’s all about finding”, says Eefke Smit, Managing Director for ScienceDirect and Bibliographic Databases, “Scopus doesn’t require you to be a search expert. It lets scientists focus on finding everything relevant: the expected as well as the unexpected. This brings serendipity and discovery into the game. The results – that’s what it’s all about.”

Scopus background

§ Scopus is Elsevier's highly anticipated, full text-linking abstract and indexing (A&I) database

§ The first fully functioning version of Scopus was released to select libraries for final testing and user trials on 15th March 2004. Full commercial release of Scopus is 3rd November 2004

§ At the heart of Scopus is the biggest A&I database of scientific literature ever assembled, covering titles from over 4000 STM publishers. Scopus also simultaneously searches the scientific Web using the science-only Internet search engine, Scirus

§ The Scopus user interface offers easy-to-use searching straight from the home page and intuitive browsing tools

§ Users can link to their entitled full-text articles in one click, making ‘dead-links’ a frustration of the past

§ Industry-leading levels of reliability and powerful delivery are coupled with local customer support, customer-specific usage reports which have just been awarded COUNTER-compliant status, as well as on- and off-site training, to make Scopus a complete package for librarians and end-users

Thomson Releases Study on Open Access Journals

Thomson Releases Study on Open Access Journals

Thomson Scientific, a business of The Thomson Corporation, has released a new White Paper entitled: "Open Access Journals in the ISI Citation Databases: Analysis of Impact Factors and Citation Patterns." The findings indicate that journals published under the Open Access (OSA) model continue to gain impact in the world of scholarly research. Despite ranking lower as a group than those published under traditional models, the growth in the number of OA journals is impressive, and some OA journals rank near the top of their respective fields. Rankings are based on the Journal Impact Factor, as published in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Thomson Scientific has updated its study of OA journals to include data from the 2003 JCR. Using citation metrics such as Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, and Cited Half Life, the study focuses on determining whether OA journals perform differently from other journals in their respective fields. The full paper is available at www.isinet.com/forms/whitepapers.
