The Anatomia website: from the University of Toronto Libraries

8. University of Toronto Libraries: Anatomia
http://link.library.utoronto.ca/anatomia/application/index.cfm

Developed by the University of Toronto Libraries, the Anatomia website
offers a collection of about 4,500 plates and images of human anatomy from
the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library ranging in date from 1522 to 1867.
Visitors can search the plates by entire plate description, artist, subject
words, and/or plate title or can browse the plates by artist, title, or
subject. By selecting the Anatomia highlights link, users can view images of
importance due to their contributions to the advancement of knowledge,
educational value, or artistic value. Students can discover the three
processes of creating illustrations during the sixteenth to the nineteenth
centuries: relief, intaglio, and planographic. The website supplies a
concise history of the study of anatomy. [RME]

Subject: Micromedex not working--Server down
The server is down, and the IT people are working on it. They do not know at this point when the server will be up.

It seems that only Micromedex is affected as far as we are concerned, because access to other databases seems ok.

Elucidation of protein-protein interactions using chemical cross-linking or label transfer techniques.

Understanding the architectures of multiprotein complexes is a central problem in biology. Of the many chemical methods available, label transfer and cross-linking are becoming more popular. Recently, label transfer has been applied to very large protein complexes with great success, and new oxidative methods for protein cross-linking have been developed that are fast and highly efficient. Advances in these techniques should increase the understanding of biological structures and mec

hanisms.

ScienceResearch.com is a free, publicly available Internet web portal

Press Release Source: Deep Web Technologies

Deep Web Technologies Announces ScienceResearch.com(TM)
Thursday June 9, 8:10 am ET

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Deep Web Technologies, LLC (http://www.deepwebtech.com), a leading provider of high performance search technology software and solutions, announced the launch of the Beta version of ScienceResearch.com(TM). ScienceResearch.com is a free, publicly available Internet web portal allowing access to numerous scientific journals and public science databases.

ScienceResearch.com allows students, teachers, professors, researchers, and the general public to access pertinent information, quickly, easily, and with confidence from both public and private high quality research journals and databases via a single portal. Powered by DWT's proprietary Explorit(TM) deep web search engine, a single query will search thousands of high quality journals and databases, effectively millions of documents, in real-time. Additionally, powered by DWT's proprietary QuickRank(TM) technology, the results are conveniently ranked by relevance on a single results page.

"ScienceResearch.com is an extension of the work we have accomplished deploying a number of highly visible search portals for the federal government," said Abe Lederman, President and CTO of Deep Web Technologies. "We are confident that ScienceResearch.com will increase the efficiency of the 'science-oriented individual.' With our next release of ScienceResearch.com, the automation of the search and notification processes of pertinent science data, an individual is kept up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs in that field. In the past, the general public has had to rely on individual queries of numerous journals and web sites. Now, they have the capability of accessing these journals, databases and web sites through a single portal without the hassle of navigating each individual search page interface and authentication sequence."

Roger Rios, Director of Business Development, added, "Please allow me to emphasize that ScienceResearch.com basic service is free to the public. By the end of the year ScienceResearch.com will have the advanced features that Abe mentioned, namely Alerts and Personal Libraries, which may be subscribed to for a nominal monthly or yearly fee. ScienceResearch.com will serve as the core engine for customized solutions for more sophisticated but cost-sensitive users, such as public and university libraries." In addition, ScienceResearch.com will become a springboard for the development of solutions focused on vertical markets such as pharmaceuticals and oil and gas industries.

New open access journals from BioMedCentral

Two new open access journals from BioMedCentral have been added to LYMAN, the UCHC Library online catalog.
http://lymannet.uchc.edu/

Behavioral and Brain Functions
http://www.behavioralandbrainfunctions.com/
from v.1 (2005)--
Behavioral and Brain Functions (BBF) is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal considering original research, review, and modeling articles in all aspects of neurobiology or behavior, favoring research that relates to both domains. Behavioral and Brain Functions is published by BioMed Central. The greatest challenge for empirical science is to understand human behavior; how human behavior arises from the myriad functions such as attention, language, memory and emotion; how these functions are reflected in brain structures and functions; and how the brain and behavior are altered in disease. Behavioral and Brain Functions covers the entire area of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience – an area where animal studies traditionally play a prominent role. Behavioral and Brain Functions is published online, allowing unlimited space for figures, extensive datasets to allow readers to study the data for themselves, and moving pictures, which are important qualities assisting communication in modern science.

Globalization and Health

http://www.globalizationandhealth.com/
from v.1(2005)-
Abstract
This debut editorial of Globalization and Health introduces the journal, briefly delineating its goals and objectives and outlines its scope of subject matter. 'Open Access' publishing is expected to become an increasingly important format for peer reviewed academic journals and that Globalization and Health is 'Open Access' is appropriate. The rationale behind starting a journal dedicated to globalization and health is three fold:

Firstly: Globalization is reshaping the social geography within which we might strive to create health or prevent disease. The determinants of health – be they a SARS virus or a predilection for fatty foods – have joined us in our global mobility. Driven by economic liberalization and changing technologies, the phenomenon of 'access' is likely to dominate to an increasing extent the unfolding experience of human disease and wellbeing.

Secondly: Understanding globalization as a subject matter itself needs certain benchmarks and barometers of its successes and failings. Health is one such barometer. It is a marker of social infrastructure and social welfare and as such can be used to either sound an alarm or give a victory cheer as our interconnectedness hurts and heals the populations we serve.

And lastly: In as much as globalization can have an effect on health, it is also true that health and disease has an effect on globalization as exemplified by the existence of quarantine laws and the devastating economic effects of the AIDS pandemic.

A balanced view would propose that the effects of globalization on health (and health systems) are neither universally good nor bad, but rather context specific. If the dialogue pertaining to globalization is to be directed or biased in any direction, then it must be this: that we consider the poor first.
