PubMed's Cubby deactivated -- Jan 28 2005
Sent: Friday, January 28, 2005 8:20 PM
Subject: PubMed's Cubby deactivated today
Just a reminder that late today PubMed's Cubby system was deactivated while we transition over to My NCBI.
My NCBI is expected to be available, Tuesday, Feb. 1.
We made one change after we published the article in the Technical Bulletin. The option on the My NCBI sign in screen that lets the user remained signed in (until signed out) has been changed so that the user must actively select this feature, i.e., the default is for a session only sign in. The TB article was amended and can be viewed at:

We're tuning in to TV
Last year some friends and I visited Wisconsin for a wedding and had a couple days to kill. What to do? The groom recommended some spots to visit, a certain cheese factory in particular, but the websites I found weren't very helpful; just a few pictures and descriptions, not enough to really give the flavor of the place. In other words (you'd better sit down for this), this was an instance in which the Web didn't have the information I needed.
But the night we arrived, I turned on the TV in my hotel room, started flipping channels, and was idly watching some travel show when a thought hit me: surely someone, somewhere must have produced a travel show episode about Wisconsin, maybe even about that cheese factory. But of course there was no way to find it.
Soon there will be. Google Video is a new product that enables you to search an index of transcripts from recent TV programs. It's just an early-stage beta product at this point; you'll only see stills and text snippets from shows that match your search terms, and you can only search shows from a few channels, dating back to December, 2004, when we started compiling the index. But we'll be steadily improving Google Video in the months to come, so as they say in the TV biz, stay tuned.
Oh, and by the way, the cheese factory was really cool.

New open access journal added to LYMAN online catalog : AIDS Research and Therapy
AIDS Research and Therapy is an Open Access, online journal that publishes peer-reviewed research articles from scientists working to prevent the spread of AIDS.
Issues are available from v.1:no.1 (2004:December)- .
AIDS Research and Therapy aims to publish basic science as well as clinically important research articles that impact on abating the spread of AIDS. This multidisciplinary journal aims to keep scientists and clinicians abreast of the latest research on HIV-1. It will publish articles on novel and developing treatment strategies for AIDS, as well as on the outcomes of established treatment strategies. Original research articles on animal models that form an essential part of the AIDS treatment research will also be published. The ultimate goal of the journal's focus is to lead bench research to bedside practice to combat AIDS.
AIDS is spreading at alarming rates in several African and Asian countries. Thus, any development that occurs in combating AIDS should be disseminated as rapidly as possible through the world. Although there are several AIDS-related journals in print, none of them are openly accessible to the world through the Internet. AIDS Research and Therapy will provide an Open Access journal specifically devoted to HIV-1 and AIDS research.

Subject: HOMER Issues -- HOMER DOWN AT 9:30AM TUESDAY.
Folks:
We are currently experiencing hardware failure on HOMER.
The short
story is that one of HOMER's system discs has gone bad. Our plan is to
back up the current system disk and attempt to move its contents to a
non-failing disk. HOMER will require two outages: HOMER
needs to be
brought down while the system disk is being backed up, and
it needs to
be brought down again later when we switch HOMER over to run its system
from the non-failing disk.
At 9:30AM today, I will bring HOMER down to begin the system disk
backup. The system will be down for approximately one hour while the
backup is run. I will try to bring the system back up so Library staff
and the public have access to it while we prepare the new system disk
and configure HOMER to use it. I plan on having another
outage early
this afternoon (tentatively scheduled for 2:00PM) when we reboot HOMER
to use the new system disk. The second outage, if all goes well,
should be no more than 15 minutes.
Quick synopsis of planned outages:
1) 9:30 - 10:30 AM
2) 2:00 - 2:15 PM (tentative)
Thank you for your patience in this matter.

SpiderNevi medical tutorial search engine project is a non-commercial volunteer project started by a group of doctors from UK and India. Its main purpose is to provide a free human edited relevant tutorials directory to medical fraternity. All included links are reviewed by a volunteer team of doctors and medical students before inclusion in the SpiderNevi database.
You can help this community project in three ways:
1. By giving your valuable feedback
2. By reporting bad tutorial links in database
3. By suggesting new medical tutorials
If you are a doctor or software expert and wish to join our team

From Theory to Practice : improving the impact of health services research.
K.Brazil, E. Ozer, M.M.Cloutier, R.Levine, D. Stryer.
While significant strides have been made in health research, the incorporation of research evidence into healthcare decision-making has been marginal. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of how the utility of health services research can be improved through the use of theory. Integrating theory into health services research can improve research methodology and encourage stronger collaboration with decision-makers. Discussion Recognizing the importance of theory calls for new expectations in the practice of health services research. These include: the formation of interdisciplinary research teams; broadening the training for those who will practice health services research; and supportive organizational conditions that promote collaboration between researchers and decision makers. Further, funding bodies can provide a significant role in guiding and supporting the use of theory in the practice of health services research.
New open access journal from BioMedCentral added
from v.1 (2005)-
http://www.molecularpain.com/home/
ISSN: 1744-8069
Molecular pain is a relatively new and rapidly expanding research field that represents an advanced step from conventional pain research. Molecular pain research addresses physiological and pathological pain at the cellular, subcellular and molecular levels. These studies integrate pain research with molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, modern electrophysiology and neurobiology. The field of molecular pain research has been rapidly expanding in the recent years, and has great promise for the identification of highly specific and effective targets for the treatment of intractable pain. Although several existing journals publish articles on classical pain research, none are specifically dedicated to molecular pain research. Therefore, a new journal focused on molecular pain research is needed. Molecular Pain, an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal, will provide a forum for molecular pain scientists to communicate their research findings in a targeted manner to others in this important and growing field.

Early next week, users who subscribe to NLM-Announces (http://list.nih.gov/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=nlm-announces&A=1) will see these notices plus a third that will provide the dates of the conversion.
The article explaining My NCBI is very long as there are many items to point out regarding saving searches and the new filters feature.
Whereas the Cubby was used by many librarians to manually generate updates for patrons, My NCBI has the added ability of providing automatic e-mailing of updates to a single e-mail address per account. We hope that librarians will help patrons to set up their own accounts.
As always, questions concerning PubMed can be e-mailed to custserv@nlm.nih.gov.

As I am just receiving this news, too, I'll be spending some time today reading the articles mentioned above. However, please feel free to direct questions my way, too, if you wish. I'll do what I can to assist you.
Automatic emailing of search updates from the Cubby -- oops, from My NCBI! Will wonders never cease?! Happy New Year!

LWWOncology is now extinct
LWWOncology : a collection of online oncology textbooks has met its extinction. Since OVID’s purchase of LWW, a medical textbook and journal publisher several years ago, several pieces of the LWW electronic platforms have been removed. These individual titles, though no longer online, are still available in print in the UCHC library book stacks.
