Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine

http://www3.oup.co.uk/jnls/list/ecam/scope.html

About the Journal

Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (eCAM) is a new international journal that seeks to understand the sources and to encourage rigorous research in this new, yet ancient world of complementary and alternative medicine.

This international rigorously peer-reviewed journal seeks to apply scientific rigor to the study of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities, particularly traditional Asian healing systems. eCAM will emphasize health outcome, while documenting biological mechanisms of action. The journal will be devoted to the advancement of science in the field of basic research, clinical studies, methodology or scientific theory in diverse areas of Biomedical Sciences.

With a base in Japan, eCAM will be the first true platform for scientists and practitioners in Asia. With Asia as their home, these contributors are familiar with the way many CAM techniques have been practised for centuries, giving the journal a firm footing in the history and tradition of CAM.

CAM is a world-wide phenomenon and eCAM will seek to be inclusive of new and old work all over the globe. With this same broad view, the journal will seek to be truly inter-disciplinary with a varied editorial board on which philosophers and historians will be engaged in dialogues with immunologists and clinicians. The two bases, one in the east and the other in the west, at UCLA, will be gathering places for information and with combined efforts will bridge cultures as well as CAM and modern biomedicine.

Open access to all eCAM papers online

OUP has adopted a policy of 'Open Access' for all eCAM papers online - so regardless of where you are geographically based, you will be able to read all published research in eCAM at no cost to yourself, and without a subscription.

Furthermore publishing authors will not be required to pay an 'author submission charge' for eCAM - frequently a requirement for other 'Open Access' journals. This has been made possible by the generous support of INMPRC (Ishikawa Natural Medicinal Products Research Center), co-owner of the journal with OUP.

CrossRef™ Launches Pilot Program of CrossRef Search, Powered By Google

CrossRef™ Launches Pilot Program of CrossRef Search, Powered By Google

New Initiative Enables Cross-Publisher, Full-Text Searches of the Latest Medical and Scholarly Research

Lynnfield, MA April 28, 2004 - CrossRef announced today a new initiative that enables users to search the full text of high-quality, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and other resources covering the full spectrum of scholarly research from nine leading publishers. Called CrossRef Search, this new pilot program utilizes the collaborative environment of

CrossRef, the reference-linking service for scholarly publishing, and Google™ search technologies.

“CrossRef is very excited to work with Google on this pilot program. Researchers, scientists and librarians should find CrossRef Search a valuable search tool,” said Ed Pentz, executive director of CrossRef. “Now, researchers and students interested in mining published scholarship have immediate access to targeted, interdisciplinary and cross-publisher search on full text using the powerful and familiar Google technology,” Mr. Pentz continued. “CrossRef Search, like CrossRef itself, breaks down barriers between publishers on behalf of research and library communities.”

CrossRef Search is available to all users, free of charge, on the websites of participating publishers, and encompasses current journal issues as well as back files. The results are delivered from the regular Google index but filter out everything except the participating publishers’ content, and will link to the content on publishers’ websites via DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) or regular URLs. CrossRef itself doesn’t host any content or perform searches - CrossRef works behind the scenes with Google to facilitate the crawling of content on publishers’ sites and sets the policies and guidelines governing publisher participation in the initiative. As well as enabling CrossRef Search, the partnership with Google also means that full-text content from the publishers is also referenced by the main Google.com index in its more general searches. Participating publishers, with links to the CrossRef Search pages, are:

· American Physical Society ( <http://prola.aps.org/xrs.html>)

· Annual Reviews ( <http://arjournals.annualreviews.org/search/external>)

· Association for Computing Machinery ( <http://portal.acm.org/xrs.cfm>)

· Blackwell Publishing ( <http://www.blackwellsynergy.com/servlet/useragent?func=showSearch&type=external>)

· Institute of Physics Publishing ( <http://www.iop.org/EJ/search>)

· International Union of Crystallography ( <http://journals.iucr.org/> --click “search” and scroll down the page)

· Nature Publishing Group ( <http://www.nature.com/dynasearch/app/dynasearch.taf>)

· Oxford University Press ( <http://hmg.oupjournals.org/search.dtl> -- each journal’s search page includes a link)

· John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ( <http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/crossref.html>)

The CrossRef Search pilot will run through 2004 to evaluate functionality and to gather feedback from scientists, scholars and librarians for the purpose of fine-tuning the program. Participating publishers are also investigating how DOIs can be used to improve indexing of content and enable persistent links from search results to the full text of content at publishers’ sites. CrossRef is also in discussion with other search engines.

About CrossRef

CrossRef is an independent membership association (currently it has 300 members), founded and directed by publishers. Its general mission is to facilitate access to published scholarship through collaborative technologies. Specifically, CrossRef operates a cross-publisher citation linking system that enables a researcher to click on a reference citation in a journal on one publisher’s platform and link to the cited article at another publisher’s platform. In this way, CrossRef functions as a sort of digital switchboard. It holds no full text content, but rather effects linkages through DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers), which are tagged to article metadata supplied by the participating publishers. A DOI allows for persistent linking, because once material has been given a DOI it never changes, unlike a URL which becomes obsolete when it is moved. The end result is an efficient, scalable linking system.

Dear Arta,

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

Recently we have been experiencing some server problems which were causing
certain areas of the site to either load very slow or just not load at all.
These problems should now be fixed and everything should be back to normal.

If you are finding that you are still having trouble in accessing the site
then please can you provide me with the link that you are trying to access
so that I can further investigate, and may be able to get the information to
you by other means.

Apologies for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.

OCLC First Search and WorldCat and ECO

On April 18, 2004, the WorldCat database on FirstSearch was moved to a new
technology platform that has enabled several major enhancements to
searching. Foremost of these are:

The keyword (default) index for WorldCat now includes Author Keywords, ISBNs
and publication dates. Users are more likely to have successful searches and
get expected results. In particular, the addition of Author Keyword mirrors
the operation of many local systems and other search services.

The default ranking by holdings has been made more accurate by basing the
ranking on actual holdings counts instead of by ranges of holdings. The
exception is that records with 0-5 holdings will be ranked together, rather
than by actual counts. The more accurate ranking will allow users to judge
their results more easily.

Non-English articles will be removed from the start of phrases. Users will
get consistent results from phrase searching, no matter what language.

The reloading of WorldCat on FirstSearch has enabled many other
enhancements. These include new indexes and minor display changes designed
to improve results. After the installation of these changes, users will get
different results - most noticeably in the Keyword Index - from the same
searches they did previously. Please note that neither the old results nor
the new results are erroneous; the indexing has simply changed.

Dear Arta Dobbs;

We would like to apologize for the inconvenience which missing or incorrect
content on ScienceDirect causes to you. We appreciate receiving details from
our customers when you realize content is missing. We are aware that we
currently have around 0.5% of missing content on ScienceDirect which is a
significant reduction on the figures two years ago. Missing issues are
usually the result of a temporary loading delay which we work hard to
identify and complete as soon as possible. We understand that our users need
to know when an article or an issue is missing, and we do have a program in
place to continuously track the content on ScienceDirect and actively
correct any omissions or errors. Unfortunately this process can take some
time, and so we ask for your patience as we work to correct these errors.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance or information.

SpringerLink e-journal platform

When SpringerVerlag Publishers hosted its own e-journal platform, there was a searchable category of "Online First".
These articles were published online prior to full and complete editorial and peer review and subsequent assignment of volume, issue and page numbers in the print/online journal.
This was also its own searchable category on the website.
However, since SpringerLink content is now hosted at the MetaPress e-journal platform, this category and search capability has disappeared.

There are still articles in "Online First" that have not completed the publication process . The only way to find them now is to do an author or title search in SpringerLink on a citation from MedLine. In these instances, MedLine will not provide volume, issue and page numbers. They will be identified only by the terminology of " Online First"
