NEW EDITION OF ALZHEIMER'S PRACTICE GUIDELINE
Please visit www.PsychiatryOnline.com to take advantage of these enhancements to your current subscription.
The American Psychiatric Association has released the Second Edition of Practice Guideline
for the Treatment of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias.
Key recommendations address the use of pharmacological agents to treat cognitive impairment in patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias,
including the cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine.
Vitamin E, recommended in the first edition for cognitive decline, is no longer recommended because of lack of efficacy and safety concerns.
The new edition also updates recommendations for treating common symptoms associated with dementia
such as depression, sleep dysfunction, and agitation and aggression.
The role of the psychiatrist in limiting driving by patients with dementia according to their level of impairment is also addressed.
You'll find the new Practice Guideline here: http://www.psychiatryonline.com/content.aspx?aID=152139
(or click on APA Practice Guidelines from the www.PsychiatryOnline.com home page).
