Scopus completes extensive archive project

Scopus completes extensive archive project - backfilling 2,450 journals to Volume 1, Issue 1

In January 2007 Scopus announced an agreement with major publishers and societies to add their archives. Scopus has now loaded complete archives for over 2,450 Journals from several publishers back to 1823, Volume 1, Issue 1. With the addition of the archives the pre-1996 material has grown from 15 million records to 18 million records.

In 2007 and 2008, abstracts from complete archives have been added from: Springer/Kluwer, American Physical Society (APS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), Institute of Physics (IoP), Royal Chemical Society (RCS). In addition: The full archive of the journals Nature and Science have now been completed and includes first record of "The Lancet" in 1823.

By adding the archives a wide variety of users will be able to retrieve more results when searching in Scopus. One example is the famous paper of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen, who in 1935 introduced a thought experiment challenging long-held ideas about the relation between the observed values of physical quantities and the values that can be accounted for by a physical theory. What became known as the EPR paradox (after the last names of the authors), is still being cited in Scopus - so far over 2,600 times.

Project MUSE launches new web interface; enhanced features aid discovery and navigation

Project MUSE launches new web interface; enhanced features aid discovery and navigation

Project MUSE is pleased to announce the release of a new web interface, enhanced with many features to aid ease of navigation, expand discovery, and encourage deeper interaction with the wealth of scholarly content offered by MUSE.

Online now at http://muse.jhu.edu, the new site design offers several new tools and resources for scholars, librarians, and publishers. MUSE offers full text access to current content from nearly 400 high quality journals in the humanities and social sciences, from some 100 not-for-profit publishers, and the web site’s improved features will help users find, utilize and share this content more readily and efficiently.

A highlight of MUSE’s new web site is wider range of functionality at the individual journal article level, including the ability to email a link, find more articles from the same author(s), and share the article via popular social bookmarking services. Color indicators allow users to easily determine to which content they have full text access, at both the journal and article level.

Improved navigation in the site’s informational pages makes it easier for researchers, librarians, and publishers to access tools such as training guides, usage statistics, journal holdings information, and technical documentation. A new search feature also offers the ability to search only the informational pages, to quickly locate key details such as pricing, upcoming journal additions, or supported technologies. An entirely new section is dedicated to information for current and prospective publishers of journals in MUSE.

Additional features are planned to further enhance the new web interface. During the fall and winter, users will begin to see reference linking and a “Related Articles”list at the journal article level, and a new cover sheet with functionality comparable to the HTML articles will be added to the PDF versions.

From June 30th 2008 the journal content currently available on Blackwell Synergy www.blackwellsynergy.com will be delivered through Wiley InterScience www.interscience.wiley.com due to the merger of Wiley-Blackwell's online journal systems.

This is a first step in the development of a next generation online publishing platform, arriving early 2009, which will deliver Wiley-Blackwell journals, online books, reference works, databases, protocols and other electronic resources through one integrated service.

The benefits will begin immediately after June 30th:

* One-stop access to a dramatically expanded range of relevant material
* approximately 3 million articles
* 1400 journals
* 5000 online books, reference works and databases

Information for Registered Users of Blackwell Synergy

* No action is necessary — all active accounts* will be migrated automatically. If you already have a Wiley InterScience account your information will be combined. You may be requested to accept new terms and conditions the first time you log in after June 30th.

* Blackwell Synergy will close at the end of June 27th. During the transition weekend of June 28th and 29th Wiley InterScience will be unavailable for a period. Look out for notes on this website nearer the time for more details.

* Any pages you have bookmarked in Blackwell Synergy will be redirected to the relevant page on Wiley InterScience from June 30th

* Access to articles and most functions will continue uninterrupted, although you will notice small differences in design and terminology. For a short period between 13 June - 1 July it will not be possible to register for new table of contents email alerts or save searches.

Elsevier enhances e-journal platform ScienceDirect with new features

Elsevier enhances STM platform ScienceDirect with new features - 16 Apr 2008

STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced that new intuitive reference and navigational features have been added to its online STM platform, ScienceDirect.
The new features, which were developed in cooperation with researchers, are seen to deliver clearer results with fewer clicks.

Additionally, researcher comments and ratings from 2collab, Elsevier’s free web-based collaborative platform, will be integrated with the articles in ScienceDirect.
With this upgrade researchers are projected to experience a boost in productivity and a faster and more seamless research process.

Researchers typically want to evaluate the relevance of an article without reading through it, and they do so by using the article abstract, figures/graphs and references.
To speed up this process, ScienceDirect now offers preview tabs on the results page or table of contents page.
These facilitate one-click access to components, without the page reloading, enabling a seamless and simple research process.

An article toolbox
also improves navigation by bringing together all of the article-related functionality including ‘Cited By’ and ‘E-mail Article’ into one easy-to-find location.
The toolbox will save time and help customers easily find the tools they need.

Researchers can now view reference information when their cursor moves over a reference marker in the body of an article.

The information shown includes links to the referenced articles (if available). Researchers will be able to view or download the referenced paper immediately if they wish.
Previously, reference information was only available at the foot of the article page.
